Intervention in the deadly stop in Katowice

In 2019, at the intersection of al. Korfantego from ul. A tragic accident occurred in Gniezno in Katowice - our 17-year-old friend Natalia, leaving school, was fatally hit by a tram.

A few years later, in 2024, another accident occurred - this time the man was hit by a bus. It was a signal to me that we couldn't wait any longer. I organized a collection of several hundred signatures under the petition to the mayor of Katowice, in which I requested to improve safety at this dangerous intersection. I wanted no one else to have to lose their lives in a place where it should be safe.

To publicize the matter, I engaged the media - TVS, Katowice24.info and Gazeta Wyborcza - thanks to which the story reached a wide audience. Mrs. Ewa M. played a huge role, to whom I am very grateful for her support and help in reaching out to journalists.

Thanks to this intervention, the city allocated over 600 thousand zlotys to modernize the intersection. A number of key changes have been introduced, including:

  • Construction of a new tram platform with barriers separating passengers from the roadway.

  • Additional pedestrian crossings that provide safe access to the stops.

  • Facilities for the blind and visually impaired, such as media lanes at the aisle.

Although no action will reverse what happened to Natalia, I believe that these changes can save others from a similar tragedy. I am proud that I managed to bring this matter to an end and that safety at this intersection has become a priority for the city.
